Female pattern hair loss and treatments

Female pattern hair loss is distinctive form of hair loss also known as androgenetic alopecia. Studies have shown that 40% women are affected from this kind of hair loss.

In this condition women can notice diffuse thinning of hair on scalp due to excessive hair shedding or reduction in hair volume and even in few cases both can happen. There is another condition that cause hair loss in females called telogen effluvium. In which hair shedding get increased and often look similar as female pattern baldness but both conditions differ from each other.

Unlike the male pattern baldness it is very uncommon for women get bald unless there is excessive production of the male hormone called androgens in the body.


Generally this condition occurs when hair follicles start shrinking over the time that results into shorter and finer hair and even follicles stop growing new hair. However there are not much clear reasons for this condition but it can be related to

  • Age
  • Imbalance of the level of androgens such as after menopause many females found that hair on their head start thinning
  • Family history of male or female pattern baldness


Both male and female pattern baldness differs from each other as male observe receding hair line and even horseshoe shape bald patches but in female no as such bald normally.

In females, mainly hair start thinning on the top and crown of scalp means basically it starts widening from the center hair part. The front hairline remains unaffected unlike the men pattern loss except normal recession.

In women hair loss gradually progress to total baldness as it can be in case of men.

Itching or skin sores on the scalp are generally not seen during female hair loss


Diagnosis of this condition mainly depends on the root cause for hair loss, extent of hair loss and even appearance of hair loss matters. However diagnosis also depends on the medical history of the patient so that it can be sure that patient does not have any contradiction from any medication.

After observing the each issue related to hair problem doctor examines for the level of androgen by examining the abnormal new hair growth either on face or between belly button or pubic area. Changes in the menstrual periods also have been asked for diagnosis.

If you are suffering from acne problem then this can also be taken care while examining the problem. Then hair is looked under the microscope to check the problems related to structure of hair shaft.


However few women face only mild pattern hair loss so if it does not affect your appearance then there is no need of treatment as such but some medication must be taken to control the loss.

In moderate hair loss FDA approved medication Minioxidil can be taken with 2% concentration for curing the problem for the time asked by doctor. If this medicine does not work then some other medicines like ketoconazole and spironolactone can be taken as per recommendation of doctor
