Is it true transplanted hair falls out?

In today’s world, hair transplant is a permanent and reliable solution for baldness. If you are planning to undergo this surgical treatment then you should know transplanted hair fall out which is temporary and common.

Hair fall is a natural function of the body and it is normal to lose around 80 to 100 hairs in a day.

Difference between hair shedding and shedding after hair transplant?

Normal hair shedding

Hair growth is in a cycle which includes 3 phases and it lasts our lifetime which includes anagen, catagen, and telogen phase. These phases occur on a simultaneous basis which means one hair strand is in the anagen phase, another in the telogen phase, and another in the catagen phase.

Hair fall after Hair Transplant

Mostly, the people complain about hair fall following the hair transplantation. Not many of us know that hair shedding is completely normal and it is important for the hair to grow strong on the scalp.

The anagen phase

The anagen phase is referred to as the growth phase and it lasts for around 2 to 6 years.

The catagen phase

The catagen phase is referred to as the transitional phase and it lasts for around 2 to 3 weeks.

The telogen phase

The telogen phase is the one in which the hair shedding occurs in excess and it lasts for around 100 days. During this phase, around 80 to 100 hairs shed during the day.

How does the transplanted hair fall out?

Shock hair loss

During a hair transplant, the small incisions are made and the grafts are placed. The hair is transplanted with FUT or FUE method and the surgical method leads to shock loss and affects the surrounding hair. The temporary hair loss is known as shock loss.

You should worry about this time and it will get back to normal within 1 to 5 weeks. Within a short time, the new hair growth will start again. So, there is no need to worry as shock hair loss is a normal part of the treatment and temporary.

Graft Rejection

In some cases, there are chances of graft rejection, and many a time the recipient area does not accept the donor graft. It happens because the immune system rejects the grafts.

After-care instructions

Following the surgery, after-care is extremely important. You must listen to your doctor and pay attention to post-operative care. If you do not follow the doctor’s advice then it can affect the hair grafts completely. Keep in mind, some of the following steps:

  • Make sure to wash your thoroughly but be gentle with it.
  • Make sure you keep your head elevated for a few days following the surgery. This way it will not put pressure on the hair grafts.
  • You need to avoid consumption of alcohol and avoid smoking for at least 1 to 4 weeks so that hair grafts do not dislodge from its position.
